Today’s recipe in detail here: Crispy Tofu
The Different Types of Tofu
The 4 different types of tofu that most people are familiar with are Extra Firm, Firm, Medium and Silken. Each has its own unique texture and taste.
The Silken is the least processed of the three types of tofu. It has the moistest texture with a high water content. Silken is a good main ingredient for creamy desserts, smoothies and my oh so yummy sauces.
The Medium is a little firmer than Silken. It is more pressed in the processing of the tofu. Medium tofu therefore contains less water than Silken. Medium tofu works well in miso soups and various stuffings, scrambles, stuffed dishes and some stir fries.
Firm or Extra firm tofu contains the least amount of water of the 4 types. It also presses more easily and can be used as a substitute for meats in recipes. The Crispy Tofu recipe I highlight in today’s Cuisinicity Bite-Size uses either firm or extra firm tofu.
Tofu has been considered an alternative to meat since its inception centuries ago in China. One Green Planet has a good history of tofu dating back to the Han Dynasty in 100 AD.
I’ve been trying tofu in my own recipes as a substitute for chicken. It tastes delicious with my sauces! Stay tuned to see some of my poultry recipes transformed with tofu.
